Flame Retardant Aramid Fiber

Flame retardant aramid fibers are high-performance synthetic fibers with excellent thermal stability and chemical inertness, and their core characteristics stem from the tightly arranged aromatic ring structure in the molecular chain. This structure allows it to maintain its shape intact in extreme high temperature environments (usually exceeding 400 ℃), without melting or dripping, only undergoing carbonization, fundamentally blocking the path of flame propagation.

Flame retardant aramid fiber is a high-performance synthetic fiber that is inherently flame retardant. Its flame retardant properties are not derived from chemical coatings added during post-processing, but are inherent to its unique molecular structure. This fiber is composed of long-chain aromatic polyamide macromolecules, which have extremely high thermal stability, high melting point, and difficult to burn characteristics. When exposed to high temperatures or flames, aramid fibers do not melt, drip, or continue to burn, but only undergo carbonization to form a thermal barrier, effectively protecting users or materials from thermal injury.

Characteristics And Advantages

 Thermal Performance

● High Temperature Resistance: It can be continuously used at a temperature of 205°C. Even in a high-temperature environment above 205°C, it can still maintain relatively high strength. It only starts to carbonize at 370°C, and gradually becomes brittle, carbonizes, and finally decomposes at temperatures above 400°C. Moreover, it will not melt or drip at high temperatures.

● Strong Flame Retardancy: The limiting oxygen index (LOI) is between 29% and 32%. It belongs to a permanently flame-retardant fiber. It will not continue to burn after leaving the flame, which can effectively prevent the spread of the flame and reduce the fire risk.

 Mechanical Properties

● High Strength: The breaking strength is generally between 3 - 6cN/dtex, which is much higher than that of ordinary fibers. It can provide good strength support for products, making them more durable.

● High Elongation: The elongation rate can reach 25% - 45%. When subjected to external tensile force, it can deform to a certain extent without breaking, endowing the finished products with good flexibility and impact resistance.

● Soft and Spinnable: It has a soft hand feel and good spinnability. It can be conveniently produced into short fibers with different finenesses and lengths, and can be made into different yarn counts on general textile machinery, and then woven into fabrics, non-woven fabrics, etc.

Chemical Properties

● Acid and Alkali Resistance: It has excellent resistance to most chemical substances. It can withstand most high-concentration inorganic acids and has good alkali resistance at room temperature. It can maintain its own performance without being damaged in different chemical environments.

● Good Corrosion Resistance: It has a good resistance to most chemical substances, can remain stable in a variety of chemical media, and is not prone to chemical reactions that lead to a decline in performance.

Electrical Insulation Performance

It has good electrical insulation properties and can be used for the insulation of electrical equipment, ensuring the electrical safety of the equipment during operation and improving the reliability and service life of the equipment.

Dimensional Stability

Under different environmental conditions, the dimensional change of meta-aramid is relatively small, and it can maintain a stable shape and performance. This is very important for some application scenarios with high requirements for dimensional accuracy.

Radiation Resistance

Its radiation resistance is extremely excellent. For example, its strength remains unchanged after being irradiated by γ-rays of 1.72×10⁸rads for a long time, and it can be applied to special environments with radiation.

Flame retardant principle

The flame retardant effect of this type of fiber is mainly achieved through two ways:

1、Inorganic carbonate addition: By introducing inorganic carbonates (such as magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide) into fibers, the heat release rate during combustion is reduced to achieve flame retardant effect.  ‌

2、Special processing: The buffer layer is bonded to the aramid substrate using flame-retardant adhesive to form a stable flame-retardant structure, ensuring rapid extinguishing of the flame after it has dissipated.  ‌

Application scenarios

Flame retardant aramid fiber has become a key material for safety protection in multiple industries due to its core advantages of "non melting, non dripping, and high temperature resistance". It is mainly used in fields with high safety requirements such as firefighting equipment, high-temperature protective clothing, and flame-retardant conveyor belts. Its limit oxygen index (LOI) is usually greater than 27, making it a flame-retardant material.
